Diaper Bag Essentials: What You Really Need to Pack

You are on a rare outing with your precious new baby, your best friend is cooing over the sweet little bundle of joy, when out of no where an eruption that sounds like it came from a diesel truck echoes through the room. I have found the best way to prevent situations like these is to be prepared. Its an obvious solution, but in the rush to get out the door with a crying two year old attached to our leg, keeping the diaper bag stocked is often the last thing on our minds.

Here is a list of must have items that every mom should keep well stocked in the essential diaper bag.

Zip Lock Bags (to place the dirty diaper or soiled clothes in)

One last tip, each night before you go to bed, take a quick account of what needs to be replaced and do it then. You may have the best intentions to do it in the morning, but with four hours of interrupted sleep and a hectic schedule any executive would struggle to juggle, it is easy to overlook.

The first days home from the hospital are just as essential to you as they are to your baby. As new parents you will have gone through an exhilarating birth that will have left you exhausted and excited at the same time. As a new mommy you will be emotionally and physically exhausted. As a new daddy you will be overwhelmed by all your new responsibilities. The first days back at home are a time to take a few deep breaths, sit back and relax, and take time just for you.

During your first days at home it may be wise to limit the number of visitors that you allow into your home. Other than your immediate family and good friends you might want to ask others to wait a week or two before they arrive with gifts and wanting to hold the new baby. You need time to get your strength back and settle into the routine that a sleeping, feeding, and often crying baby brings into your life.

The Baby Blues

As a new mommy you will need to pay close attention to the way that you are feeling so that those “baby blues” don’t creep up and surprise you. It is normal to feel a bit out of sorts and sad for the first few weeks after giving birth. Your body is going through major physical changes after the birth of your baby. Your hormones are changing and you likely will be feeling the lack of sleep. All of this can have an affect on the way that you feel. You should be patient with yourself, understand that all these feelings are normal, and that in a couple of weeks things will feel better for you. If you find that you are feeling more depressed over time, and find it difficult to care for yourself and your family, you should consult your doctor so that he/she can determine if you are suffering from postpartum depression. Symptoms of postpartum depression include:

• Overwhelming feelings of sadness and depression accompanied by crying.
• Having little or no energy.
• Feelings of guilt and worthlessness.
• Having no interest in your baby or being overly concerned and worried about your baby.
• Weight gain accompanied with overeating.
• Weight loss accompanied by not eating.
• Feeling afraid of hurting yourself or your baby.
• Insomnia.
• Oversleeping.

It may help to talk about your feelings with others. Talk with family and friends. You can find out if there are any parenting groups in your community. Or contact the National Mental Health Association for a list of local affiliates at 1-800-969-NMHA or visit their Web site at www.nmha.org/. Churches and religious organizations in your community may be able to help you find people to talk to. You may also want to meet personally with your doctor to discuss the situation.

Communicating With Your Toddler through Baby Sign Language

1) Breastfeed
Breastfeeding gives both baby and mom many health advantages. For the purpose of this article, I’ll mention just a few, like the fact that breastfed babies are less harmed by pesticide exposure. They also fare better if you choose to vaccinate, suffering fewer reactions. Even though sometimes the media reports on environmental toxins found in mom’s milk, what is often left out of the picture is that the same toxins are found in cow’s milk, from which formula is made. And since breastfed children enjoy greater health even in adulthood, breast is still – and always will be – best.

Once baby is using a cup or if you’re pumping and offering bottles, be sure to use glass or BPA free bottles and cups. Bisphenol-A is a plastic additive that has been linked to cancers and other serious health issues. While we can’t avoid plastics entirely in our modern world, reducing the cumulative exposure is important. Why Should You Take Urine Test In The Morning?

And a positive answer appeared when later it turn out the woman is not pregnant. In this condition it is usually cause by a very early miscarriage.

During my pregancy I didn’t really have the desire to have my pregnancy-photos taken, I really wish I would have made more time to get them done.

If you’re anything like me, you’re usually the one holding the camera. Make sure to give the camera to hubbie so he can get the shots you can’t.

Here is what I believe are the best pregnancy-photos that you need to have done. Ok, some may sound a little strange, but believe me you will love looking back on even the silly ones!

Photo #1 Of course the day you found out you were pregnant! There are lots of women who keep the actual pregnancy test… why not take a picture of it and that can go into your pregnancy album?

Photo #2 If you have children…. take a picture of their reaction to the news.

Photo #3 Don’t forget the picture of the surprised daddy!

Photo #4 Get hubbie to take a picture of you calling your family & friends. If you’re having a dinner party to announce the wonderful news, be sure to click away that night.

Photo #5 Get a picture of yourself infront of the doctor’s office on your first visit, even get one with your doctor.

Photo #6 The next time I would bring the camera is when you get to hear the heartbeat for the first time. What a moment to capture! That’s the best moment there is for a mom to be.

Photo #7 Time for some mugshots! Get a nice front shot of yourself, then turn to your side for a profile shot. Do this every month as your pregnancy progresses. Easy to do.

Photo #8 Do you know a friend who can take some pictures of you and your husband? Get some nice shots of your husband with his head on your tummy….putting the music to your tummy…. kissing your tummy…. I could go on and on. Very cute and loving pictures.

Photo #9 Repeat Photo #8, but insert your older children.

Photo #10 Did your older children make something for your baby? Take pictures of them with their proud creations.

Photo #11 Get at least one picture of your doctor measure your belly. This is something that us women do every month with the doctor and it’s so comforting that the baby is growing properly.

Photo #12 Waiting around for an ultrasound? Bring the camera, get a picture of you infront of the hospital. You know they will make you drink a ton of water, so you’re doing the dance anyhow. Bring the camera to keep yourself busy. If there’s no one there with you……you’re in your gown right? Get a nice shot of those swollen feet.

Practical Tips To Survive The 1st Trimester Of Pregnancy

So, you’ve gotten over the elation of being pregnant. Now, despite the joy of having a little one growing in your belly, you (and your husband or boyfriend) need to deal with the nagging symptoms of pregnancy. Here are just a few tips to help you to survive:

1. Get plenty of rest: Most likely, you will be more tired than ever before during the first trimester. Listen to your body and go to bed or take naps when you are feeling tired. This may also mean cutting back on obligations, or going out with friends. Do not let yourself worry about housework, errands, or getting ready for the baby, which needs to be done. You will have more energy in the 2nd trimester, so let the things that can wait, wait. Also, ask your husband, boyfriend, or family to help you when you are tired.

2. Ask (or beg) your significant other to do the grocery shopping, cooking, and some of the cleaning: You may have aversions to foods in the first trimester or simply just do not have the desire to cook. Prepare a list of food items that you enjoy and ask your husband to prepare the meals each night or a few nights per week. Alleviating the stress of having to deal with food aversions at the grocery store and over the stove will help alleviate some of the nausea you may be feeling. Not only that, but if you are like me and working full time, you are tired in the evenings and will not feel like cooking or cleaning.

3. Make large meals on the weekends to last throughout the week: You will find that you have a little more energy for a few hours on the weekends. Snatch up those moments of energy to make a one-dish meal for the week (soups, casseroles, lasagnas, stews) so that you have something on the nights you lack the desire and energy to cook.

4. If you are experiencing nausea, try different avenues to alleviate it: There are many tips out there to ease the nausea, such as eating crackers in the morning before you get up, eating crackers all day, drinking ginger tea, and drinking ginger ale. I did not find these things to help with my nausea. One of the things that helped me was eating black licorice, eating grilled cheese sandwiches all day, and drinking lemonade. So, what works for one, does not work for all. Try different things.

5. Don’t read all of the pregnancy books: Ask your doctor for one book that their practice recommends and stick with that book. If you feel the need to buy several books on the market, do not let yourself get worried about all of the things they discuss in these books. For example, I thought there was a chance that my baby was going to have neural tube defects (due to lack of folic acid) since I did not take prenatal vitamins prior to conception and in the first month of pregnancy. My doctor assured me that you do not even need to take the prenatal vitamins until the 20th week.

6. Call your doctor if you have concerns about anything! Your doctor will assure you more than the books or anyone else for that matter.

Lastly, have fun during your first trimester! Cherish all of the changes and experiences your body goes through during pregnancy as it forms a little miracle inside.

Bathroom Cleaning Tips

Toilet
• Let the toilet bowl disinfectant remain in the toilet bowl for 15-20 minutes. Not only will it help with disinfecting, it will also get the toilet clean and smelling better.
• Can’t get the smell out of our toilet? Try baking soda. Baking soda is a natural odor remover. All you need to do is sprinkle about one cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl and you’ll begin to see a difference. Sprinkle the baking soda in the toilet once a week to keep the odor from returning.
Shower
• To remove dirt and mildew from the corners of the tub or shower, dip cotton balls in bleach, place them in the corners of the tub and leave them there for 15 minutes. Remove the cotton balls and rinse well.
• Clean your glass shower doors with vinegar. Vinegar is a fantastic all natural cleaner and inexpensive too. You can purchase it in bulk from warehouse stores. For shower doors with hard water stains, pour vinegar, directly from the bottle on the doors. Let it remain for 10-15 minutes. Lightly scrub with a sponge and then rinse with water. For lighter stains, dip a sponge in vinegar and wipe the shower doors.
• Shower curtains can get dirty with mildew frequently. To help prevent mildew on a shower curtain, soak it in a bucket of water and salt. Many shower curtains are machine washable. Follow the instructions on your shower curtain for easy washing.

1. When you can, multi-task to save time. For instance, put in a batch of wash while you cook breakfast or read to a child. Have a cake baking in the oven while you write a letter. When multi-tasking do things that don’t take all your attention at the same time like talking to someone on the phone and trying to write a report.

When doing errands write a list and write numbers by them in the order you will do them, this will save time as you won’t be going from one end of town to the other and back again.

2. Write a “to do” list every night of what you want to do the next day. This way you have started to organize your day before you are in the thick of things and you can’t even remember what you wanted to do. Structure your day so you can do the things that take the most energy when you are most productive. For morning people you’ll get a lot done in the morning, for evening people your most productive will be at night.

3. Set a limit on how much time you will search the web (set a timer) or watch television. Watching television can be a time to multi-task by folding clothes or working on a craft project so you are doing two things you want or need to do at the same time. Take control of your time; setting a timer can help you do this.

4. If you are in charge of a meeting whether at school, work, or church start and stop on time. People will soon realize they will miss out if they are late as you will have a reputation of starting on time. Have an agenda for the meeting and stick to it. This gives structure so the objectives are met and with everyone knowing the goals the meeting is more efficient.

5. Learn to say no. You are the best person to know what you can and cannot do in a day. By not over extending yourself you will get more done and will be much happier. This is critical in taking control of your time.

6. Get the amount of hours of sleep every night that your body needs. If you are getting up tired you may not be getting enough sleep, only you can determine this. Being rested helps you to be more effective by preventing errors and having to do something over which will cost you more time. Also you’ll have more energy so you can get more done.

7. Get organized and keep organized. By clearing clutter you will save time by not having to search for things you need. It also eliminates the stress of needing to purchase something you can’t find and getting late fees at the library or movie rentals.

8. Delegate tasks to others at home and at work. You don’t have to do everything yourself.

Now that you have more hours in the day to do what you want to do, are you going to sleep in or are you so energized you can take on a new task, spend more time with your family or have some quiet time for yourself? The choice is yours.

I have a friend who avoided going home after work because it was just too depressing. Her home was cluttered and disorganized in every room. She had fast food wrappers everywhere. Drinks had spilled on the couch and carpet that made a sticky mess. She couldn’t find her DVD’s because they were scattered everywhere. She had late fees galore on both DVD’s and library books because she couldn’t find them under all the clutter. She didn’t know how to declutter her home or her life. If this sounds familiar to you here are 10 Tips on how to declutter your home and your life.

1. Some people think they are just lazy and that is why they can’t organize. As a professional organizer I have worked with hundreds of people and no one I have met is lazy, that may be an avoidance tactic. We are busy people and have a lot of demands on our time.

2. They don’t know what they want and haven’t taken the time to think about what they want their home to look like.

3. You may want to keep everything you now have in your home. In each room eliminate 30 of the stuff (depending on how much you have). If this is too hard to do get rid of 20 items in each room, again depending on how much there is to get rid of.

4. You tell yourself you don’t know where to start? Here are some suggestions of where to start: Chose the room that bothers you the most. Start in your bedroom as that room can be a place of sanctuary for you. Start on the front porch or in the entry way as that is the place visitors and guests see first. When you are in a room start organizing from the inside out, do the flat services after you have done the closet, drawers, armoire, cupboards etc.

5. Have you ever said there just isn’t enough time in the day to declutter my home? The solution is to start slow and take baby steps. Set a timer for 15 to 20 minutes and see how much you can get done in that length of time. You will be surprised how much you can get done by taking one small bite at a time. If you are in a good rhythm, reset your timer and keep on clearing clutter.

6. You blame other people in your home for keeping the clutter around. (Only because it is often true). We all only have so many hours in the day to do everything we want to do. Have you ever said, “Where did the day go, I didn’t get anything done”? Here are 8 tips on how to get more done in a day and maybe you can push that snooze button one more time.

1. When you can, multi-task to save time. For instance, put in a batch of wash while you cook breakfast or read to a child. Have a cake baking in the oven while you write a letter. When multi-tasking do things that don’t take all your attention at the same time like talking to someone on the phone and trying to write a report.

When doing errands write a list and write numbers by them in the order you will do them, this will save time as you won’t be going from one end of town to the other and back again.

2. Write a “to do” list every night of what you want to do the next day. This way you have started to organize your day before you are in the thick of things and you can’t even remember what you wanted to do. Structure your day so you can do the things that take the most energy when you are most productive. For morning people you’ll get a lot done in the morning, for evening people your most productive will be at night.

3. Set a limit on how much time you will search the web (set a timer) or watch television. Watching television can be a time to multi-task by folding clothes or working on a craft project so you are doing two things you want or need to do at the same time. Take control of your time; setting a timer can help you do this.

4. If you are in charge of a meeting whether at school, work, or church start and stop on time. People will soon realize they will miss out if they are late as you will have a reputation of starting on time. Have an agenda for the meeting and stick to it. This gives structure so the objectives are met and with everyone knowing the goals the meeting is more efficient.

5. Learn to say no. You are the best person to know what you can and cannot do in a day. By not over extending yourself you will get more done and will be much happier. This is critical in taking control of your time.

6. Get the amount of hours of sleep every night that your body needs. If you are getting up tired you may not be getting enough sleep, only you can determine this. Being rested helps you to be more effective by preventing errors and having to do something over which will cost you more time. Also you’ll have more energy so you can get more done.

7. Get organized and keep organized. By clearing clutter you will save time by not having to search for things you need. It also eliminates the stress of needing to purchase something you can’t find and getting late fees at the library or movie rentals.

8. Delegate tasks to others at home and at work. You don’t have to do everything yourself.

3. You may want to keep everything you now have in your home. In each room eliminate 30 of the stuff (depending on how much you have). If this is too hard to do get rid of 20 items in each room, again depending on how much there is to get rid of.

4. You tell yourself you don’t know where to start? Here are some suggestions of where to start: Chose the room that bothers you the most. Start in your bedroom as that room can be a place of sanctuary for you. Start on the front porch or in the entry way as that is the place visitors and guests see first. When you are in a room start organizing from the inside out, do the flat services after you have done the closet, drawers, armoire, cupboards etc.

5. Have you ever said there just isn’t enough time in the day to declutter my home? The solution is to start slow and take baby steps. Set a timer for 15 to 20 minutes and see how much you can get done in that length of time. You will be surprised how much you can get done by taking one small bite at a time.
